6-20-10 Wilmington DE (2)

We went to Church this morning at St. Joseph on the Brandywine, the Church where Sue's brother Mike and his wife Nat got married lo these many years ago. ;)

The Church is right next to Hagley and was the Church for the workers at DuPont's factory.

Then we drove off to Winterthur, the gardens and estate of yet another DuPont. This person was really into interior decorating and the house is filled with examples of the art. The house is huge, having 100 rooms; it has been expanded many times. I have tow pictures from the outside but it is hard to get a picture of the whole house.

The following pictures show examples of what one sees on the tour. Collections of dishware - and complete huge collections. Furniture in immaculate condition, of many different styles. And showcase rooms to show off the furniture and other decorations. This person would find very old houses about to be torn down in the nearby cities and then save a room, complete with all the trim and contents. That room would then be rebuilt inside a room in his house. The net effect is like wandering in a museum full of connected displays of early American fine living.

So isn't this serving table gorgeous? And those silver tankards on it - yes, those are Paul Revere products. Nothing but the best.

Going out side we took the shuttle bus that goes around the very large grounds. This place does not have formal gardens like Longwood, except for right around the house. Here the effect is more wide open, lots of different types of trees, large meadows. There was a children's play garden with some "fantasy land" structures built in it. We walked some but it was pretty hot. At about 3 pm we decided to head for home.

What a trip!
