So the downside today is that Dan and Paula leave. We really had a good time with them and they are such low-maintenance visitors. The up side is the weather. I have been wearing long sleeve shirts again for about a week now. Brought the two coats home from work last week. Today was the first time I really felt comfortable in my sport coat going into work. Coll breeze in the air - it got warm in the afternoon but still very pleasant. Yes sir! We are into the good time of year.

9-19-2010 Visit Arboretum
Sunday was our last full day with D&P. The ladies decided to explore downtown Alexandria and visit some open houses. Don and I decided to go to the National Arboretum to see the Banzai exhibition on show there. It was another great day. The Banzai exhibits were fantastic, including one that had been trained from 1625 (the tree on the right). The gardens were also quite nice, with flowers in bloom in the herb and spice gardens. A nice way to finish the visit.
9-18-2010 Visit St. Michael's Maryland
Then we walked down to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. One main attraction was the Hooper Strait Lighthouse, a screw-pile light that had been moved to this site. There were many other exhibits in the Museum, including the Dove, the replica of the original boat that brought the colonists to Maryland. Don and I toured the boat and talked
to a docent about parallels
between today's attitude in the US towards Muslims and attitudes back in the 1800s towards Catholics in Maryland.
We drove out to the water to see the other light in the area, one off shore in the water. I got a distant picture of it, but add it to the collection. Just barely got into the place where I could take a picture, the gate being controlled by a B&B at the end of the island.
9-10-13 2010 Wolkerstorfer visit Part 1
Don and Paula Wolkerstorfer came to visit us for a week plus. They arrived late Friday night and are staying until the 20th.
Saturday was a beautiful day and after a trip to the Farmers Market, we took D&P to the Civil War Forts on the Maryland side of the Potomac. The picture is at the small lighthouse by Ft. Washington.
After getting back we took a water taxi ride to Gaylord National harbor. The boat ride was fun and we explored the large hotel and went up in the tower.
Sunday was a rainy day and we took D&P to see the George Washington Masonic Memorial. As always, a very interesting place, though this time we didn't have a real masonic expert as a guide.
On Monday the Sieberts came to our place and we all walked downtown to have dinner. The Sieberts had just gotten back from an African safari and thus had pictures to show. It had been sometime since they shad seen D&P so it was a good reunion.
8-28-2010 Trip to Albuguerque
Sue and I spent a week and two weekends in Albuquerque. She worked all 5 days and I did some meeting, some strategic planning for 5700, and a trip to LANL. We stayed at the Marriott residence inn by the airport. The first Saturday in town we went down to Neumann Center for Mass and ran into Tom and Gail Dougherty - a good reunion. Talked with them about meeting when they are back in Maryland for Tom's Annapolis reunion.
We also visited with the Huebners one night for dinner. We went to dinner with folks from the dinner group on Friday night.
8-27-2010 Jazz in the Garden
Sue and I went down to the Sculpture Garden to see what the Jazz events were all about. I had heard about these from some of the other Labbies in the office. So Sue came down and met me after work and we walked over there. We got there an hour after the start time. It was packed! The average age must have be 25. There were small groups all over the lawns, in chairs they had packed in, enjoying picnics or the drinks served by the Garden. The music could be heard above the talk but it was clear the music was not what the event was all about - it was meet and greet time. We stayed for about 30 minutes and watched people - we did find a bench to sit on - must have been reserved for old foggies!
